Royal Artillery

Post by MEFISTO »

Royal Artillery shell is dirty-cheap, 35 ammunition is too cheap and easy to spam plus a low cool-down. Games turn in the never end artillery barrage. I suggest increasing its price to 45.

It costs "only" 35 ammo but it is because the 25 pounders are much weaker than the 105mm howitzers of Wehr and US.
The 105mm deal 452 damage on direct hit but the 25pounder deals 168 damage on direct hit. Damage falloff is the same but 25pounders have smaller AoE.

Even if they shoot a lot, they need more hits to destroy stuff, compared to almost all other howitzers. Knowing this, is a cost increase justified?

The problem is, this 165 damage is more than enough to destroy any emplacement and wipe down all infantry. If you think price is right, I suggest an increase on the cool-down. When RA spam this 25 pounder the game turns into the never end artillery barrage, any way for high damage they also have the priest.

The direct hit numbers are against tanks. Infantry actually takes higher damage, but still...

The direct hit on infantry from a 25 pounder deals 225 base damage. The strongest Axis infantry has 85 or 90HP, green cover reduces the damage by half so you're looking at 112 damage on direct hit. This can be further lowered by the "veterancy" unlocks to 84 damage on direct hit which the elites can survive ("can" is a factor here as the unit can still from a critical roll).

It is also worth mentioning, that 225 damage is only on direct hit, when it lands just slightly next to the soldier, the base damage is 93, which is 46 damage when the infantry is in green cover and goes to 35 damage with the damage-reducing unlocks.

In comparison, the 105mm has base damage vs infantry on direct hit 603. Reduced to 302 with green cover and further to 226 with veterancy unlocks. With a close hit, you're looking at base damage 251, green cover 125 and 94 with veterancy unlock - still good enough to kill any infantry of Allies.
So, the 25pounders are only really deadly against emplacements and we want arty to be primarily anti-camping tool.

If others agree, we can increase the cost. I just wanted to give the numbers for comparison so people can decide if it is OK to make the 105mm barrage just 5 ammo more expensive when it is so much more effective.

It's super weak, 35 ammo is reasonable, could be even cheaper.

Keep in mind not all infantry is elite; just imagine 2 or three of those shooting all the time, almost no stopping, since its price is ridiculous low and cool-down too. Even if the caliber is lower still is very effective and feels like there is no penalty for being that cheap. In my opinion if the price will stay cool down should be increased for this 24 pounder, they have spotters and and lieutenant that can do off-map artillery and priest. At the moment the 24 pounder barrage shell is not that far from a mortar barrage, that is crazy.

25. pounders are fine as they are 100%.
They are a mid game arty that cant keep up in later stages and is more or less just an early tool to work with your superior firepower by arty compared with other doctrines.
If you increase the cost of them, Royal Arty is even more a late game doc.
Also, due to ammo upkeep, its basicly impossible on normal maps to maintain 2 25 pounders AND a priest, which makes them obsolete in later stages, since you rely mostly on arty. If you cannot kill tigers, panthers or any other big cat, you are pants down with this doc = you NEED the priest. And they are expensive.
