How does veteran work?

As in the title. I'm particularly curious about officers, and also, what is the fastest way to level them up?

The best way to get vet for officers is have them follow people around as they can get vet not solely by getting kills, but by influencing others that get kills. I like to have them near hot spots where MG teams, mortar teams, or snipers are able to get kills. They can sit and man the MG in halftracks and get vet while inside them too.

Getting vet is based on what the unit kills, like a single engineer will be worth less xp compared to a sniper

Command units can get XP in two ways:
a) by killing enemy on its own (which is hard because they are usually single-man units/lightly armed vehicles)
b) standing near units that kill other units gives 50% (iirc...or maybe 25%?) of the XP to the commander
- Commanders can only receive XP for kills from units they are able to command (So LT cannot get XP from tank that destroys enemy tank; on the other hand "Command Cromwell" gets XP from vehicles so for RA you can Vet the tank by keeping it near Priests who kill stuff with barrages)
- The unit that made a kill gets 100% of the XP and commander gets half of the amount the unit gets (so commanders don't "steal" XP from units around)
- "near" generally means "in his aura radius"
- also if a unit has abilities that can directly kill enemy, the unit that "casts" the ability gets the XP for kills. So WM Officer has "mortar barrage" ability - if it kills something Officer gets XP, RA commanders can call-in offmap arty - the same thing
