Revoking attack/defend instructions to friendly AIs

When playing with friendly AI, the attack and defend markers control their behaviour.
If these markers are never used, the AI moves units around all over the place; when they are used, it more or less concentrates all units on the marked spots and they stay there.
Is there a way to turn *off* the attack or defend instruction, once one has been given?
