They usually pick the best route featuring some mice mg42 plus a few tanks and grens with mp44.

For axis any route usually ends in recce/greyhoud/staghound death pursue xD

I’m trying to figure out the “can’t retreat units surpressed” bug

It'd be cool if when you hit the retreat button, you could pick a point they'd beeline to, before choosing their own path back to HQ. Would be slightly micro-intensive but could help a lot.

Then again, I have no idea how difficult this would be to implement.

Doable but abusable. Example:
Retreat to behind the mg emplacement.

Like Gebis? Idk if they can still place a flag but you could do that. Place a flag behind enemie lines (like exposed town etc) and retreat your entire army to that location. Thats why AB and RAF got their own special forward retreat point that cant be used by normal inf.

i mean the point of this post isn't to find a new way to retreat, but to find out why units can get suppressed while retreating.

I think you miss understand. It'd be essentially designating a way point before they went autopilot back to base. So they'd not retreat behind an mg, just run behind it before continuing to shit their pants and run all da way bek to base.
