Can't load skirmush or join multiplayer games

Just downloaded COH and this mod after having not played it for many years. SO FUN! I wanted to have my buddy play with me versus some AI but we are unable to.

When he tries to join my game he accepts the invite and it times out. When he tries to host his own game or load up skirmish it gives him an error on the main menu: "An error occurred while starting the game."

He downloaded and installed the steam version fresh as well as downloaded the main mod and the following patch. I had no issues with my game but his doesn't let him go to skirmish or MP. Any help?

Friend,before the game,dont customize your army (green upgrades) later do it and delete old "temp.rec"

He doesn't have a playback folder because he can't play the game. As soon as he clicks skirmish it gives him an error. Also, because he can't get into a lobby, he can't customize his army :/
