It should work fine - the pre-set path is there because most people had the Steam version so it was easier for them to install it with few clicks without changing anything in the installation process.

Before Steam we were releasing the mod on the ModDB so latest version there should be the latest non-Steam version.

After a quick search it should be v5.0.0 (Link here) It is a full release so it should not require any other version to be pre-installed.

Unlike the HE shots, the CS cannot miss, has wider AoE (often catches entire squad in it) and higher damage. If enemy infantry rushes close to you, this can be life saving.

Reworking it into an ability that debuffs opponents is one of the ideas for possible rework of Terror, another version of the rework gets rid of these abilities altogether. We'll see which one we'll go with in the end.
