As for the "mortar barrage should cost ammo" - I am not really against it. Especsially when mortars have the "Attack ground" button which allows you to pretty much keep shelling some location non-stop for free anyway. So perhaps it could be made the way that "normal" s...

Yes it came back to normal, but the old ability before the rework would stop affecting the vehicle if the section retreated iirc

Yes, that is why I said that I would preffer BOYS rifle - to make it different from Bren Carrier. You don't think that BOYS rifle would have its usage too? I suggest to make this unit cost the same as it is until capitan or armor truck tier is reached when it would serve only as armored capper or scout. This way we can avoid too much spammability in early game and make it more appealing for late game uses.
